Working in retail my whole life I have come to the conclusion and my answer is rudeness. Why do so many people have to be rude and mean?

AMEN! It would take less energy just to smile and be nice than to keep all that negativity flowing, but I think some people just thrive on it. More's the pity for them.

I blame the person who came up with the saying: "The customer is always right." It just turns people into entitled assholes that think if they're rude enough, they'll get what they want, even if you have to bend over backwards to do it. I've worked retail or customer service my whole life too, so I totally understand.

If you're on the other side of the fence, meaning you happen to be the customer - tendency is that you look down on retail people. Simple reason for being rude. Why do they do that? Because none of them know or aware that despite your "raggedy ann" look when you're working (this is based on my line of work and where we are set up), they think you are but a mere high school graduate or just acquired a GED. Except for (most) vendors and property owners of those we go to and some very close customers realized we do have our degrees to boot. It may be overseas for some of us, but a few of my sisters have acquired their degrees in America as well. Being a graduate of Occupational Therapy and a Nurse at the same time would definitely not be selling produce at the flea market now, right? But being smart and knowing where the bread is buttered is also another thing. Being your own Boss is a double thing indeed. So why worry where you end up if you are receiving the same kind of dollar in the end. You own your time, you decide when to have holidays and enjoy your job with your family and friends! Triple love!

The more rude customers we have, the more fun! We can joke at their rudeness and they always come back! So everyone is happy!

You just have to love the idiosyncracies of people!

Mind you, we are not only jeans and shirt people at work, we are brunette and have an accent too. We have encountered a lot of rudeness!

Becuase they think that while you are serving them that you are their servant. Stupid superiority complex.

ain't it the truth? i've been asking myself that question since i started work with the public. it really sucks! but you know what i'm finding on the flip side lately? rude workers! especially now with cell phones. i swear the next time some moronic cashier decides to answer their cell phone when i'm trying to check out, i'll loose it!
